Operation Details

LL

'LL' was an Italian convoy operation from North Africa to Sicily (24/29 November 1942).

,

Two transport vessels, in the form of the 1,459-ton Zenobia Martini and Giuseppe Leva, departed Tripoli for Palermo under escort of the torpedo boat Fortunale and then the torpedo boat Circe on 24 November, and three days later crossed paths with the 'G' convoy comprising two other transport vessels, in the form of the 5,418-ton Città di Napoli and 5,419-ton Città di Tunisi, escorted by the destroyers Mitragliere, Corazziere and Folgore as well as the torpedo boat Climene on passage from Palermo to Bizerte.

,

As a result of a wrongly executed manoeuvre, Circe was rammed by Città di Tunisi and sank, Folgore rescuing 99 of here survivors. On her return passage the other 'G' transport, Città di Napoli, accompanied by the destroyers Maestrale and Folgore as well as the torpedo boat Animoso, struck a mine off the Aeolian islands group, to the north of Sicily, and sank on 28 November.
