'Rhein' (ii) was the German programme to increase the manufacture of heavy artillery ammunition, the need for which had been emphasised in the attritional fighting on the Eastern Front in the winter campaigns of 1941/42 and other combat of greater movement in the spring and summer of 1942 (1942).
